Saraphia Matakana ventures in broiler production

Saraphia Matakana is a 58- year old passionate woman from Mazvimba village, in Chirumanzu district. Her drive towards entrepreneurship led her to become one of the broiler suppliers to a prominent local restaurant in ward 21.

Her journey towards self-sustenance began when she joined Hand in Hand Zimbabwe and registered under Kushinga Self-help group in October 2021.This life changing opportunity enabled her to go through business trainings under the Hand in Hand Zimbabwe Community Upliftment Project. After receiving the six business development trainings, the industrious woman identified an opportunity to venture into poultry production.

As a group we were contributing USD$5.00 towards ISALs, I received a USD$50.00 loan which I injected into my business as start-up capital. My dream to be a poultry producer came true as I had also received technical skills trainings on broiler production,” she said.

Her enterprise yielded positive results as she went from managing a mere batch of 10 birds to 50 birds per cycle consistently and she supplies her chickens to local individuals and restaurants.

Saraphia speaks so highly of Hand in Hand Zimbabwe as she says the organization greatly influenced and changed her life for the better, from being an ordinary person to a well reputable woman in the community of Mazvimba. She further testified that she was selected as the vice chairperson for Budiriro horticultural garden under the Community Upliftment Project.

Saraphia makes a profit of USD200 after every 6 weeks and recently, she managed to pay USD60.00 school fees for her 3 grandchildren at Mazvimba primary school.
